New features are live! World Builder Early Access

A lot has happened since update #20 when we announced that the world builder early access was live! During December we focused on your feedback regarding bugs, quality of life changes, feature requests, and more. We're very thankful to our community for being with us through this journey. 

Throughout January we've been working on a number of features, including a new object placement system

Previously you would drag and drop each individual piece, you could still place multiple pieces by using Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V while using the magnetic tool. The new object placer instead allows users to click and place object continuously. 

We noticed many of you were frustrated by unintentionally moving objects  with the magnetic tool, since alpha launch we've introduced a selection tool and set it as default, no more moving walls and floors by accident.

New map selector: but we wanted to also highlight the new map selection screen. When saving a map it will take a screenshot of what you're looking at to use as a preview for your world.

A few of the other features we've worked this past month:

  • User Input system refactor, we now have key bindings :)
  • 3 new map sizes
  • A number of performance optimizations (we still need to do a lot more of this)
  • UI Bug fixes
  • Working on reducing keywords / tags for objects. 

PS: Yesterday we released our new OST made by one of you! You can also find it as the background music in our tavern. 

Next update will include another major system and new models!

QuestHaven - WorldBuilder Alpha is live!

Good news, the world builder's early access alpha is live! Keys have been sent out via Backertkit to backers with the Pioneer tier or above.

Create your account by clicking log in at playquesthaven.com where you can download the launcher to redeem your key.

Expect there to be plenty of bugs, and please join our Discord community to help report them!

We're getting closer. . .

We keep working hard in bringing QuestHaven to life! 

During October we've made great progress and hit an important milestone. As some of you may remember during the Kickstarter we did a survey during Update #9, and announced its results in Update #10. By popular demand we force unlocked a stretch goal we didn't hit ($300k) and map sharing came into QuestHaven's scope.

We are pleased to announce that we now have maps being hosted and searchable on our servers. Along with this we are implementing the ability to share figures and custom objects (objects made out of other in game objects).


We are getting closer to getting getting the world builder into you hands,  here are some of the things we've done so far: 

  • Added 3,800 in game objects.
  • Added a room creator (walls + floor).
  • Enabled map sharing.
  • New UI.
  • New figure creator.
  • Much more behind the scenes work (refactoring our asset database, improved save/load, etc.).

Roadmap and new UI

We know that you’ve been waiting for more information on our current state of development as well as the Early Access to our world building tools. We expect to be able to bring the world builder into your hands by the end of September!

In the meantime, we wanted to share our progress so far, as well as parts of our critical route items to launching the beta next year.

You can also see these in more detail by viewing the recap of our Tavern Hall discord event.

Growing our team and establishing an art pipeline have been important steps in getting the world builder and figure creator ready. We’ve also improved our snapping and gizmo tools so that they are now contextual to the rotation of other objects.

We’ve refactored many systems, including our item database, this will allow us to expand the list of items you can place in the world builder. At the current rate it seems we will be able to have more objects and themes than we previously expected!


UX & UI

We believe that a good UX will be a key factor towards our success as a VTT. Users should be able to access all the panels and information intuitively need intuitively without being overwhelmed. Because of this we are splitting the user interface into different modes.

  • World Builder
  • Player Tools (gameplay)
  • GM Tools (gameplay)
  • Campaign Settings
Note: Design in progress, icons will change.

In each of the modes there will be a central button which will also change dynamically, as an example, in gameplay modes it will be the dice.

Each of these modes will have up to 8 subpanels, the overall UX will keep developing as more features are added into the game. At this time we are concentrating on the world builder’s UI.

Our vision for QuestHaven

At this point we start speculating into systems that we would eventually like to get around to building given enough time and resources. Highlighted in yellow below are the systems that we feel are closer within our reach. It’s important to be clear that these are things we would like to build some day but can’t commit to at this time.

Extended Themes such as Scifi, modern war, cyberpunk, post apocalypse, and modern suburbia would add a lot of possibilities for QuestHaven campaigns! We feel like we are closer to being able to achieve this with our current art pipeline and the new item database.

Voice modulation would be an interesting tool to add to the in-game voice chat. The idea would be to switch between presets, or modify the voice to roleplay as an orc, lich, or an old lady.

The action macro system would be a way to link ability icons with a description a set of dice with modifiers to roll. We could later link it to combat emotes or spell effects, and have it be stored in your character sheet where you’d be able to perform the action at the press of a button.

We further go into detail on some of the other cards on the list in the video, including out intent to use mixed reality alongside hand gesture control.
